Monthly News – September 2026
Key points
Linux Mint's September 2026 monthly report announces the next release, Linux Mint 27 "Adrien", scheduled for Christmas, and previews a new alarm application called "Clocks". The features shown are a preview, still in development and planned for that release.
Linux Mint 27 "Adrien"
- The release is scheduled for Christmas and will be based on Ubuntu 26.04.
- It will ship in at least three editions: Cinnamon, Xfce and MATE.
- The version number now reflects the upcoming year.
- Point releases are dropped: the release after 27 will be 28, and upgrades will go from 27 to 28 to 29, and so on.
- Codenames switch to boys' names, because the girls' names used since 2006 reached the end of the alphabet with "Zena" last year.
Development cycle
- This is the first release developed over a full year, following the move from a 6-month schedule to a yearly one.
- The project lead says the longer cycle has allowed larger projects and changes than before, and that he has not seen as many changes and new features in a single release.
- He expects the beta phase to be very busy as a result.
- Besides new features, the team reports a large number of bug fixes, work on Wayland compatibility, improvements to its processes and internal tools, and prototyping of new editions.
Clocks (alarms)
- "Clocks" is a new application for managing alarms, developed alongside the new calendar and part of the Clockenstein project.
- Its interface and behaviour take inspiration from Android.
- It supports recurring alarms and custom sounds.
- Alarm notifications are delivered even when the application is not running, through the Clockenstein daemon and notification agent.
Coming next
- Three other projects are close to finished: Superlight, Unfold and Velocitty.
- The post gives no details on them and says they will be covered next month.
Funding
- Donations in August came to $13,824 from 443 donors.
- The project has 2,408 patrons contributing $5,227 per month.
