Parrot 7.4 Release Notes
Key points
Parrot OS 7.4 is available. The project describes it as a consolidation release that gathers several months of application rewrites, desktop work and package maintenance: AnonSurf is rebuilt, a new first-run tool arrives, Rocket reaches 2.0, and the ARM images and build system are tidied up.
Existing installations upgrade with:
sudo parrot-upgradeAnonSurf 6.0
- Rewritten with a Go backend and daemon and a new Qt6/QML interface for Plasma. Starting, stopping, boot handling and new Tor identities now go through systemd units instead of shell scripts.
- Changes to DNS, firewall, IPv6 and Tor configuration are applied and rolled back as a transaction, and interrupted sessions recover at boot before Tor starts. Tor can be restarted without briefly falling back to clearnet routing.
- Existing direct TCP/UDP connections to public IPv4 addresses are blocked rather than moved into Tor, so TCP applications must reconnect. ICMP is no longer redirected into Tor.
- The command line gains JSON output, DNS, public IP and Tor status checks and Nyx monitoring. The optional SafeKill action closes selected applications and cleans caches with BleachBit; unsaved work may be lost.
- The
anonsurf-gtkpackage transitions toanonsurf-gui.
New and updated tools
- Parrot Discovery is a new first-run welcome and setup application: a guided checklist of tool profiles and everyday applications, installed through APT and Flatpak commands the user reviews first.
- Rocket 2.0 has a redesigned PySide6 interface with a searchable tool catalogue and a Dockerfile manager. It prefers rootless Podman; falling back to Docker needs the user's approval for the session, and it never switches to rootful Podman by itself.
mcpwn1.3 adds per-tool timeouts, output-preview limits, accepted exit codes, and Subfinder and dnsx tools. Tool arguments are no longer written to execution logs.- Parrot Updater 2.2.0 keeps its terminal output visible after an update finishes.
Images and hardware
- Official optimised ISO files target
amd64v3(x86-64-v3, roughly machines built after 2015) andarm64v8.2(for example Raspberry Pi 5 and Apple Silicon). - New arm64 ISO images and a first Orange Pi beta, aimed at the Orange Pi 5 Ultra only for now. That image creates the user account on first boot and ships without shared credentials or pre-generated SSH host keys.
- VM builds add an arm64 target for UTM on Apple Silicon.
Desktop and fixes
parrot-core7.4.1 moves KDE defaults into/etc/xdg, disables Baloo indexing by default and fixes upgrades that could lose theme assets.- A malformed PATH in
/etc/profilewas corrected, so commands under/usr/sbinare found again in login shells. parrot-menu-securityenables install-on-demand menu entries but does not install the security tools itself; administrators can change this withShowInstallableLaunchersin/etc/parrot-menu/launcher.conf.
Versions
- Linux kernel 7.1.13, Metasploit Framework 6.5.4, airgeddon 12.02, bettercap 2.41.7, jadx 1.5.5, ligolo-ng 0.9.1, theHarvester 4.10.1 and naabu 2.6.1, among about 40 updated packages.
